Fort of San Felipe or also known as San Felipe Castle, is located in our beautiful magical town of Bacalar and belongs to the great Mexican State of Quintana Roo.

The construction of the Fort began in 1725 by the governor of Yucatan, Antonio de Figueroa y Silva. The same was developed for the defenses and protection of the population and its wealth, in the face of the constant assaults and batterings of the english men. Its construction lasted around 8 years, ending its uprising in 1733.

Its intact buildings contain more than 250 years of historical memory led by pirates of the whole world, native Mayans and Spanish settlers. It also keeps some secrets and mysteries of the Mexican brotherhood with Belize and many aspects of the local identity of the region.

On March 23, 1983, Fort San Felipe was converted into a Local Historical Museum. In 2003, it was necessary to carry out renovation and remodeling works that introduced some technological innovations attached to its great museographic function.
